Un aspetto timido e sorridente, ma che nasconde un carattere determinato, Emanuele Gaudiano ha infatti lavorato sin da piccolo per costruire da solo il proprio futuro, ma andiamo con ordine. Il nostro azzurro nasce a Matera, un figlio d’arte che tuttavia sin da giovanissimo si vede costretto per motivi agonistici a lasciare la città natale. Emanuele si trasferisce all’età di quindici anni nel nord Italia per poi abbandonare il nostro paese e stabilirsi in Germania dove attualmente risiede. Non ha mai avuto dubbi: «Quando ero piccolo le gare già andavano abbastanza bene… l’equitazione è sempre stata la mia più grande passione». Insomma un bambino con il sogno di diventare cavaliere, che oggi, all’età di 33 anni, possiamo affermare, ha raggiunto il suo obiettivo e alla grande! Seguito da Giorgio Nuti e Gianluca Bormioli è cresciuto così un talento tutto italiano.

Ma Emanuele non si accontenta di mietere successi in giro per il mondo, a differenza di molti suoi colleghi ha preferito lavorare in proprio allestendo così una scuderia tutta sua. Dal 2005 è infatti attiva la Gaudiano Stable a Vettelschoß, dove il nostro azzurro, con l’aiuto del padre Giovanni e forte della partnership con Ugo Pisani, coltiva un vivaio di giovani cavalli che addestra e porta ai massimi livelli. Un lavoro che richiede impegno e sacrificio, ma che per Emanuele è la più grande soddisfazione: «Non vorrei un cavallo che ora è sotto la sella di miei colleghi perché amo montare i cavalli che costruisco io con pazienza e che vedo fare progressi giorno per giorno, per me questo è il massimo». Fra i pupilli di Emanuele sicuramente Caspar, Carlotta e Chalou, tre cavalli molto diversi, ma con grandi potenzialità e tutte le carte in regola per donare delle meritate soddisfazioni al carabiniere scelto: il primo è uno stallone grigio di tredici anni, sotto la sella di Gaudiano da quando ne aveva quattro e con il cavaliere lucano ha preso parte alle Olimpiadi di Rio 2016; la seconda è un’infermabile femmina baia di dieci anni coetanea dello stallone sauro Chalou, ques’ultimo senza dubbio è l’attuale cavallo di punta di Emanuele. Così ne parla il nostro campione: «Caspar è un cavallo un po’ particolare, ma che può saltare tutte le gare al mondo, sensibile, di tanta potenza, bisogna montarlo bene, sin da subito ho preferito gareggiasse solo con me. Carlotta invece è stata sempre una vincitrice, piccola e insanguata, quando la monto l’adrenalina è molto alta, se fa zero è generalmente prima. Mio papà l’ha comprata quando aveva solo due anni, raggiunti i cinque ho debuttato con lei in un internazionale a Šamorín, in Slovacchia, mi ricordo che il concorso durò due settimane e su sei gare lei ne vinse quattro. Chalou invece è al momento il mio preferito, un po’ fifone ha paura delle persone, ma quando è in campo è fantastico, non ricordo neanche uno stop da parte sua, è un super cavallo».

Se per quanto riguarda i cavalli Emanuele preferisce affidarsi al duro lavoro e alla propria esperienza, in gara è un vero sportivo e tifa anche per i suoi colleghi: «Le nostre due stelle Lorenzo De Luca e Alberto Zorzi, sono quasi miei coetanei, li ho visti crescere, ed ora, è bello vederli vincere».

Parlando di appuntamenti importanti rivedremo a breve Emanuele al Global di Roma, un’occasione per il nostro cavaliere di “riabbracciare” la sua Italia. «Tornare a Roma è un po’ come tornare a casa, si cerca sempre di fare del proprio meglio, un concorso che si svolge in un posto bellissimo, in una città fantastica in cui gli stranieri vengono con molto piacere, noi italiani ancora di più». La tappa di settembre è peraltro una delle poche selezionate dal cavaliere italiano su tutti gli appuntamenti del LGCT: «Fino a qualche anno fa era più semplice essere presente all’intero circuito, ora è molto difficile per un cavaliere senza sponsor entrare a far parte di una delle squadre della Global Champions League, per i miei cavalli sarebbe poi troppo stancante partecipare a tutte le tappe».

Abbandonando per un momento lo sport: oltre al lavoro, un valore irrinunciabile per Emanuele è senza dubbio la famiglia, ma per il nostro cavaliere il detto “moglie e buoi dei paesi tuoi” non ha funzionato! Gaudiano ha infatti trovato l’amore in Germania, ma come avrà conciliato la mentalità lucana con quella tedesca? Beh per scoprirlo non vi resta che guardare l’intervista.

Emanuele Gaudiano, a Lucanian pride

A timid and smiling aspect that hides a strong character. Emanuele  Gaudiano, in fact, has worked hard since he was a child to build his own future. Our protagonist was born in Matera where he started horse riding  to continue a family tradition, but since he was teenager, he had to leave the hometown to increase his chance to succeed. At the age of  fifteen Emanuele moved first to Northern Italy and not much later to Germany where he currently resides. He never had any doubts: «Since I was a boy, I succeed in show jumping competitions … horse riding has  been always my greatest passion.» In short, a child with the dream of becoming a rider, who today, at the age of 33, we can say, has achieved  his great goal! Led by Giorgio Nuti and Gianluca Bormioli, a full-Italian talent has grown up and blossomed.

Emanuele, however, does not feel satisfied for the successes reaped all over the world. Unlike many of his colleagues he preferred to work on his own and setting up his own stable. Since 2005 Gaudiano Stable has been active in Vettelschoß, where our athlete, with the help of his father Giovanni and thanks to the partnership with Ugo Pisani, is growing a hatchery of young horses that he trains and leads to the highest levels. A job that requires commitment and sacrifice, but that for Emanuele is of great satisfaction: «I would not like to ride a horsetrained by another colleague because I love mounting the horses that I ‘build’ with patience and that I see progressing day by day. For me this is the maximum». Among Emanuele’s favorites certainly there are Caspar, Carlotta and Chalou, three very different horses, but all with great potentialities and right credentials to give deserved satisfactions to our carabineer: the first is a gray stallion of thirteen years old, ridden by Gaudiano since he was four and with which our Lucan rider took part to the Olympic Games (Rio 2016); the second is a ten-year-old sickly female bay, the same age as the chestnut stallion Chalou (this latter, undoubtedly, the current flagship of Emanuele). Describing Caspar he said: «a kind of specific type, but can be competitive in any field all over the world, sensitive, so powerful, you have to drive him with a lot of feeling. From the beginning I decided that he had to be mounted only by me. Carlotta, on the other hand, has always been a winner, small and bloody, when I ride her the adrenaline level get very high; if she doesn’t make any fault usually win. My dad bought her when she was only two years old, reached the five I debuted with her in an international championship in Šamorín, Slovakia, I remember very well that event: it lasted two weeks and out of six competitions she won four. Chalou, on the other hand, is my favorite at the moment, he is a bit of a coward and he is afraid of people, but when he is on the pitch he is fantastic, I don’t even remember any stop, he is a super horse.»

Although Emanuele prefers to rely on his hard work and own experience with horses, during the competitions he is a real sportsman and supports his colleagues too: «Our two stars Lorenzo De Luca and Alberto Zorzi, are almost my age, I have seen them growing up, and now, it’s always great to see them win».

We will see soon Emanuele at the Longines Global Champions Tour in Rome, another opportunity for our rider to “embrace” once more Italy. «Returning to Rome is a bit like coming back home and you wish always to do your best. It is a competition that takes place in a beautiful place, in a fantastic city where foreigners come with great pleasure and we, as Italians, even more». The September stage is also one of the few selected by the Italian rider between all the LGCT events: «Until a few years ago it was easier to attend the stages of the entire circuit. Now it is very difficult for a rider without major sponsors to become part of a Global Champions League team. It would be too tiring for my horses to take part in all the stages».

Beyond sport and his work, an essential value for Emanuele is undoubtedly the family. However for our rider the old Italian saying “wife and oxen from your own town” did not apply!
